Not my fault!!

Two weeks ago, I went to a restaraunt in Adayar along with my friend. This time it was my turn to loose some cash.We almost spent 2 hours there chatting various issues ranging from work in office to Indian Team's captain selection policy.
After washing my hand in the finger bowl, I took my debit card and gave it to the person concerned. he came after 5 mins and says' Sir there is no cash in ur account'. I really felt embarrassed. What I had in my wallet was some 50 bucks for me to reach home. I knew I had some amount left in my account. I had to rush to the nearest ATM (since it was my treat, my friends's wallet was also empty!) to get the cash. When I checked my balance in the ATM,the balance left was 10 times more than the amount printed in the bill.
Did the barer do it intentionally to get his tips??If I had paid the bill by card, his chances of getting the tips are less. he made me pay the bill by cash and got his tips.

not sure if the billing system in india works different, but over here in the US, when u pay by card, a line for TIP comes up and u add the amount to the sub-total.
but i agree, that would have been embarrassing indeed.
You can always tip the waiter through the "TIP" that is printed on the chargeslip that is presented to you when you pay through a credit card. There's another trick here: The merchant has to pay a 2.5% surcharge on the transaction amount, IF the payment is done throught a credit / debit card. A lot of people merchants charge this to the customer. But a lot of people, because of this reason, refuse to accept the card.
