Indian Shangai
Indian PM Manmohan Singh said that his vision is to make Mumbai like Shangai city.. the same was said by Maharashtra CM Deshmukh.. few days (before that terrifying Tuesday..) back.
What happened on July 26'th and the events that followed that day indicate how far Mumbai is from being called as Shangai. The Maharashtra Govt. was paralysed for a day.Normally, A journey which takes 45 minutes took more than 15 hours. People were held up in traffic and had to stay in their cars for almost 36 hours.
Not a single drop of water was available to wet their lips.Even during this horrible period ,the people helped others who were staying in their cars by providing them buscuits and water(Spirit of Mumbai). The govt was completely taken by suprise because of the intensity of the rain. The drainage system of Mumbai was designed some 40 years ago and it can withstand only 4.5 cms of rain. But on 26'th what Mumbai witnessed was 94 cms. of rain. There was no power and water for 3 days. Amitabh didn't have bath for 3 days(which was a headline in a news paper!!)..imagine the fate of people living in slums... The govt.calls for army help only after 24 hours.
Mumbai lost touch with other parts of the country completely for 2 days. The financial capital of India couldn't function and a huge loss was inccured. As this suffering was not enough, people who were supposed to travel by AI had to suffer even more. All those sufferings in my next post!! Now you start sharing your views on the rains in Mumbai..

we have a long way to go yet. basic infrastructure needs to be in place before we talk about super power, IT HQ etc. i was reading in rediff (some reader's opinions). 95% of the people who died during this period in maharashtra, did not die due to rain.. it was due to mismanagement and poor construction.
hope this would be a lesson.
yes man..
and the saddest part was more than 20 people lost their lives becuase of a rumour that tsunami will be hitting mumbai..so a stampade started and 20 people lost their lives..
